Howard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today?
Binders was founded in 1955 by my father, Moe Krinsky, and his brother Joe after they transitioned from running Moe’s and Joe’s Tavern in Virginia Highlands into retail. They purchased a small frame and gift shop called Binders—hence the name—and later added art supplies at the suggestion of a traveling salesman.
I joined the business in 1982, working in both store operations and commercial sales. As digital technology began to replace traditional art production, that side of the business declined. In 2001, my partner Jay Shapiro and I purchased Binders and shifted our focus to growing the retail art supply business while becoming deeply involved in Atlanta’s creative community.
After Jay’s passing in 2010, I continued leading the business with the support of our dedicated team, carrying forward the same passion and commitment.
